ABOUT ME
Hi, my name is Dr Louise R Mayhew. I'm an art historian, writer, editor and creative mentor.
I fell in love with art history sitting on my childhood lounge-room floor, poring over large illustrated catalogues. At University, I followed my passion, completing a Bachelor of Art Theory (with First Class Honours) and then a PhD in Australian Art History at UNSW Art & Design. My doctoral thesis constructed the first ground-breaking history of women-only art collectives in Australia, 1970–2010.
As a university lecturer at UNSW Art & Design, and then Queensland College of Art, I taught everything from Ancient Greece to the most Contemporary of Art, and developed specialist courses on visual culture, ethics, aesthetics and politics. In these roles, I developed my passion for mentoring emerging creatives and researchers, supporting them to reach their goals in making, exhibiting, writing and teaching.
In early 2021, my contribution to the arts was formally recognised by the International Association of Art Critics (IACA). I'm also a Premium NAVA (National Association for the Visual Arts) Member and a Creative Business Champion for the Regional Art Services Network (RASN) and Arts Queensland.
Today, I share my passion for art and the world around us through gallery lectures and public programs, professional development workshops, curating exhibitions, research and writing. And I help others to achieve their goals and reach new audiences through PR, advocacy for women artists and artsworkers, art world mentoring and grant advice, postgraduate examination, report writing, copyediting and proofreading.
I believe that great art deserves great writing. And great artists deserve enthusiastic, accessible, goal-oriented support. To work with me, email louisermayhew@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
